A pro-reservationist's view

Following message was posted on a discussion forum giving views of a pro-reservationist:

"I find people who still opposing when Government is ready for Reservations Without Cut in General Quota are really selfish and scared that their monopoly over Indian education system and job might finished.

I’ve some questions to be answered by upper caste friend.

1. Do you really thing in India there is no caste based discrimination?
2. Do you think there should be appropriate representation in education / job from each caste according to their population?
3. Do you think person suffering from polio can win 100 meters race against you
4. Can you compare 90% marks of you and 60% marks of your maid’s children?
5. What do think about Shankaracharya and Pujari’s seats are reserved only for Brahmins?
6. Do you think was it right on part of Dronacharya (Brahmin Guru) to deprive Eklavya of Education? ( When Eklavya came on his own to become better than Arjun, Dronacharya took his thumb as Gurudakshina for lessons he never took)

Enough is enough we can’t take this humiliation any more. All my friends who believe reservations for better should be united against these selfish, self-centered mentalities.

India just can not afford one more Eklavya."

Reply from an anti-reservationist:

"How selfish and self-centered you are?
Now point by point answers to your questions.

1) There is caste based discriminiation even now, but it has come down so much we see inter, intra caste marriages everywhere... In some more time.. the caste divide will be over once and for all. But till then, we should not try to aggrevate it by bringing in more divisions in every damn thing we can think of.

2) No, that will compromise the quality. There should be no caste based representation... Had that happened NASA would never have succeded in any of its endeavours... nor would india have tested atom bomb.

3) He cannot. But that doesn't mean a 100 meter race to be reduced to 10 meter one for polio affected people. You should also think of mal-nutritious other segment as well.. so a BIG NO.

4) No, but that does not give any preference for my maid's son over my son... They both are equal and one should only compete and try to evolve, not going backdoors..

5) Shankaracharya is humiliated.. and pujari seats are open for all in TN. This will be now implemented everywhere.. (The job is the lowest paying one... Come on join the club and suffer)

6) No. it wasn't right... But presently nobody is depriving you from learning... Like your great hero EKALAIVA, you learn things better, compete with Arjunas and become a hero.. (Note Ekalaiva worked hard.. whereas you people donot want to improve your basics and want to escalate by backdoors)

Nobody is humiliating you, it's your own people who humiliate you by offering you quota (read entice or bakshis)".

My reply:

"I have read your message. Your questions have been very ably answered in the previous message.

I feel that you have failed to understand the purpose behind this anti-quota movement. This movement is not against any one. Rather it is supportive of the role a society and people should play in developing disadvantaged sections of the society. It is for inclusiveness for all. It is for exclusiveness of none.

This movement is against a typical negative mindset which creates divisions in the society and hatred between people, and which thinks that reservation is the only affirmative action for providing equal opportunities to all.

Let me also touch upon few points.

1. There is still caste based discrimination in Indian society. But a large measure of this is because of those who have found an easy way of moving ahead without making any efforts for it. The creamy layer in SC, ST and OBC is one such section of the society who want that caste discrimination should continue.
2. Each person should be given necessary resources and exposure from primary education level itself. We should not talk of percentage. It creates ivisions.
3. No person suffering from polio can win 100 meters race against an able person. But reservation is responsible for such state. Empower the people so that they can run and win on their own cpability and not put them in front on reserrvation crutches.
4. Did maid’s children got 90% marks because they are inferior to my children, or they lack resources and exposure? You answer this and then I will give final answer.
5. I am against any reservation including for Shankaracharyas and Pujaris.
6. Dronacharya was an individual and did not represent any section of the society. Such indivisual cases should not be generalized. He was a private tutor kept by the king for his children. How could he have admitted some other student in a school which was not his property?

No body is humiliating you. You are same as me. You have same rights and duties as me.

I do not believe reservations are for better. Reservations have created more problems than serving the intended purpose. I am with you if you form any organization for empowering people, all the people without any discrimination."
